Wisdom teeth can cause pain. You may be advised to have your wisdom teeth removed by an oral surgeon or dentist. In the meantime, you can relieve pain using both over-the-counter and natural medications.

Impacted wisdom teeth can’t fully enter the mouth. Sometimes, they can’t even break through the gums. In fact, about 70% of people have at least one impacted wisdom tooth.

An impacted wisdom tooth can be painful and cause other issues like:

1. Saltwater Rinse

A saltwater rinse is one of the most common remedies for severe toothache in a wisdom tooth. A 2016 study showed that rinsing with warm water mixed with salt helps promote healthy gums and kills harmful bacteria. When wisdom teeth come in, they can damage other teeth or cause cysts. It’s important to keep your mouth free of harmful bacteria.

A 2021 study found that a saltwater rinse has anti-inflammatory properties similar to 0.12 percent chlorhexidine solutions (also known as Peridex). This was observed in 47 patients undergoing periodontal surgery.

2. Peppermint

Peppermint leaves contain menthol, a natural cooling compound known for its pain-relieving effects. While peppermint may not specifically target wisdom tooth discomfort, it is generally considered safe to use.

You can apply peppermint oil directly by rubbing it on your teeth, or you can soak a cotton ball in a little peppermint oil and apply it to sore gums. After it cools down, peppermint tea also makes a good mouthwash.

3. Clove Oil

Cloves are a popular remedy for toothaches. A report suggests that the active ingredient in clove oil, eugenol, has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects.

You can use clove essential oil or boil up to six cloves in water to create a solution for massaging your gums.

It’s important to note that high doses of eugenol can be toxic to the liver. Ingesting 10 to 30 milliliters of clove oil could lead to an overdose. When using clove oil to relieve toothache, be careful not to use too much.

5. Aloe Vera

Aloe vera contains anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. It can be used as a soothing agent to reduce inflammation around your wisdom teeth. This also helps heal your gums when they are cut or scratched as your teeth grow in.

You can apply aloe vera gel directly to the gums to temporarily relieve pain.

6. Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is a powerful antibacterial agent that can help kill bacteria on your teeth. However, it is not recommended to apply this oil directly to your teeth because it’s very strong.

Instead, you can dilute tea tree oil with coconut oil (a carrier oil) and apply it to inflamed gums. This can help kill bacteria. Remember, you should not swallow tea tree oil. After treatment, rinse your mouth and spit out any remaining residue.

7. Crushed Ginger and Garlic

In a study on plant remedies, crushed garlic was identified as one of the most effective ways to kill pathogens that invade and infect gum tissue. Garlic is even more powerful when combined with ginger, crushed into a paste.

To use this remedy, crush raw garlic into a paste, then add ginger, and apply the mixture to your gums.

8. Menthol

Menthol has natural analgesic properties that bring a cooling sensation when applied to the skin. You can use menthol to relieve pain from wisdom teeth by diluting a mouthwash that contains alcohol, peppermint flavor, and menthol. Apply this diluted solution to the affected area for pain relief.

9. Turmeric

Turmeric is a spice that has been used to remedy various ailments for centuries. Its analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties make it a potential remedy for toothaches.

To reduce swelling and pain, you can apply turmeric powder directly to the affected area. You can also make a paste by mixing:

  • Two parts turmeric
  • One part salt

Turmeric is generally considered safe for pregnant women, but they should not consume it in amounts greater than what’s typically found in food.

10. Oregano Oil

Carvacrol, a powerful ingredient also found in oregano, is present in thyme.

To use thyme oil, dilute it in a carrier oil. Apply the mixture to the affected area using a cotton ball or your fingertips. Repeat this several times per day. For a mouthwash, add one drop of thyme oil to a glass of warm water.

12. Capsaicin

The active ingredient in cayenne pepper, capsaicin, is said to relieve inflammation and pain. A 2017 review concluded that capsaicin was a promising treatment for some types of nerve pain.

Since capsaicin can irritate the body, it’s best to start with a small amount and see how you react.

Dilute a few drops of pure capsaicin oil or extract into a cup of water. Apply the solution to the affected area with a cotton ball. You can also use this solution as a mouthwash. Repeat this process throughout the day.

13. Lavender Essential Oil

To use lavender oil, dilute one drop in 1 teaspoon of carrier oil. Apply it to the affected areas with your fingertips or a cotton swab several times a day.

You can also add two drops of lavender oil to a warm cup of water to create a mouthwash. Use this solution up to three times a day. Alternatively, cooled lavender tea can be used as a mouthwash.

14. Wheatgrass

Wheatgrass is often promoted as a healthy option. It is considered a natural pain reliever, although there are few direct studies supporting this claim. Wheatgrass is rich in chlorophyll, and a 2020 study showed that phytol, a component found in chlorophyll, may help reduce arthritis pain.

Aspirin, which you may take for severe headaches, can also relieve severe toothache in a wisdom tooth. According to a 2015 study, aspirin can be an effective pain reliever for those experiencing discomfort in the mouth.

Do not exceed the dose recommended on the aspirin label. Do not take aspirin continuously for pain relief unless under the supervision of a doctor or dentist.


Benzocaine acts as an anesthetic, providing numbing and sedative effects. Brands like Orajel and Anbesol offer over-the-counter dental pain relievers that contain benzocaine.

Benzocaine should not be used on children under 2 years of age or on people with deep lesions or wounds. It may also cause hypersensitivity in older adults.


Ibuprofen has anti-inflammatory properties and is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It is available in generic form as well as under brand names like Advil.   • Only use the mouthwash prescribed by your dentist; avoid over-the-counter mouthwashes.
  • Use straws sparingly, as sucking can increase bleeding.
